About
Biography
Gourisankar’s musical foundation was laid in his own home, where he began learning tabla under the guidance of his father, Pandit Shib Sankar Karmakar. This early training instilled in him discipline, clarity of rhythm, and respect for tradition. In 1979, his journey entered a defining phase when he came under the tutelage of Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, one of the most respected tabla masters of his time. Under this long and rigorous mentorship, Gourisankar refined his technique and developed a mature understanding of rhythm and accompaniment.
He is an “A” grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, a recognition that reflects his standing in the field of Indian classical music. His work spans traditional solo and accompaniment roles, as well as experimental formats that bring together Eastern and Western musical ideas. He is equally involved in North–South musical dialogues, contributing to interactions between Hindustani and Carnatic traditions.
Over the years, Gourisankar has performed with many of India’s most eminent artists and has also collaborated with musicians from across the world. His career reflects a balance between classical depth and contemporary engagement, rooted in lineage yet open to new forms. Through performance and collaboration, he continues to represent a thoughtful and evolving voice of the tabla in today’s musical landscape.
