Ganesh Rajagopalan

Ganesh and Kumaresh are an Indian classical violin duo known for their contributions to Carnatic instrumental music. Born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, the brothers—Ganesh Rajagopalan (1964) and Kumaresh Rajagopalan (1967)—began their musical training at a very young age under the guidance of their father, Sri T. S. Rajagopalan. Over the years, they developed a distinctive performance style that brought the violin to the forefront of Carnatic concerts, moving beyond its traditional role as an accompanying instrument.

As performers, Ganesh and Kumaresh have presented concerts at major music festivals and cultural platforms across India, the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Australia, and other regions. They are also composers who have contributed music to films and dance productions, including works such as Dance Like a Man and Chandrikai. Their musical concept “Raga Pravaham” explores the depth and flow of Indian ragas and talas through instrumental improvisation and innovative concert formats.

The duo has received numerous honors for their contributions to Carnatic music, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018 for Carnatic instrumental music (violin). Ganesh Rajagopalan is also associated with the fusion group Shakti, which received the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album in 2024 for the album This Moment. Through concerts, recordings, and educational initiatives, Ganesh and Kumaresh continue to promote Carnatic violin performance on international stages.
