About
Biography
Eric Harland (born November 8, 1976, in Houston, Texas) is an American jazz drummer whose career spans performance, bandleading, and recording. He began playing professionally while still in high school at Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, an institution known for producing notable musicians. During this period, he earned recognition in regional and state jazz ensembles and received a Citation for Outstanding Musicianship from the International Association for Jazz Education.
Encouraged by Wynton Marsalis to pursue further study, Harland moved to New York and attended the Manhattan School of Music on a full scholarship. Alongside his music career, he later studied theology and was ordained as a minister, reflecting a parallel interest in spiritual life.
Harland has been a member of several prominent groups, including Charles Lloyd’s Quartet, Dave Holland’s Prism, and James Farm with Joshua Redman. Earlier in his career, he performed with major figures such as McCoy Tyner, Terence Blanchard, and Joe Henderson. From 2005 to 2012, he was also part of the SFJAZZ Collective, a rotating ensemble dedicated to new works and reinterpretations of jazz repertoire.
As a sideman, Harland has appeared on more than 80 recordings. Several albums he contributed to—such as Back East (Joshua Redman), Wandering Moon (Terence Blanchard), and Land of Giants (McCoy Tyner)—received Grammy nominations. His work also extends into film, where he has participated in multiple movie scores in collaboration with Blanchard and director Spike Lee.
As a leader, Harland has released albums including Voyager: Live by Night, Vipassana, and 13th Floor, featuring musicians from the contemporary jazz scene. His projects highlight original compositions and group interplay rather than virtuoso display alone.
In industry recognition, Harland has appeared in DownBeat readers’ and critics’ polls and has been listed among leading modern jazz drummers. He has also been featured in Modern Drummer magazine. In 2017, he co-founded GSI Studios in New York City, a recording facility supporting creative music projects.
Overall, Eric Harland is regarded as a versatile and in-demand drummer whose work connects mainstream jazz, modern ensemble music, and film scoring. His career reflects both technical command and adaptability across musical contexts.
