Biography

Edgar Meyer (born November 24, 1960) is an American bassist and composer whose career spans classical, bluegrass, and jazz traditions. Raised in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, he began studying double bass at an early age under his father, Edgar Meyer Sr., a string educator. He later studied with Stuart Sankey at Indiana University School of Music, graduating in 1984. His early training combined classical discipline with exposure to American roots music, a blend that would shape his later work.

As a performer, Meyer is noted for a refined technique and a tone suited equally to solo and ensemble settings. He has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras and has recorded repertoire ranging from Bach’s cello suites (performed on double bass) to contemporary concertos written for him. His concerto recordings and solo albums helped expand the presence of the double bass as a featured instrument in concert music.

As a composer, Meyer has written concertos and chamber works for leading performers and ensembles. His works have been premiered and recorded by artists such as Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Hilary Hahn, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Commissions from institutions and festivals, including the Nashville Symphony and Aspen Music Festival, reflect his standing in contemporary composition. His writing often integrates rhythmic ideas and melodic structures drawn from both classical and American vernacular traditions.

Collaboration is a central element of Meyer’s career. He has worked frequently with Béla Fleck and Zakir Hussain, notably on The Melody of Rhythm, a triple concerto combining bass, banjo, and tabla. His long-running partnership with Chris Thile has produced recordings and tours that cross genre boundaries. He was also part of the acclaimed project The Goat Rodeo Sessions with Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, and Thile, which received Grammy recognition.

Meyer has received numerous honors, including multiple Grammy Awards, an Avery Fisher Prize, and a MacArthur Fellowship. In addition to performing and composing, he is active in education, serving as Artist in Residence at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music and on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music.

Overall, Edgar Meyer’s work is characterized by technical command, compositional originality, and cross-genre collaboration. His career has contributed to broadening the artistic role of the double bass in both classical and contemporary music contexts.
