Biography
Dipali Nag was a distinguished Hindustani classical vocalist known for her powerful voice and refined style of khayal singing. She was born on 25 September 1922 in Kolkata, a city famous for its rich cultural and musical traditions. From an early age, Dipali Nag showed great interest in music and began her training under the well-known musician Gyan Prakash Ghosh.
She later continued her musical education with legendary maestros such as Faiyaz Khan and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Their guidance deeply influenced her singing style, which beautifully combined elements of the Agra and Patiala gharanas. Her performances were admired for their clarity, emotional expression, and strong command of rhythm and melody.
Dipali Nag mainly performed khayal, but she also sang thumri, bhajans, and other semi-classical forms. She performed at many prestigious music festivals, and her concerts were broadcast on All India Radio, helping her music reach audiences across India.
In recognition of her contribution to Indian classical music, she received the Padma Shri in 1970. Dipali Nag remained an important figure in Hindustani classical music and inspired many musicians. She passed away in 2009, leaving behind a lasting musical legacy.
