Deepsankar Bhattacharjee

Sri Deepsankar Bhattacharjee is a distinguished fourth-generation sitarist and a leading exponent of the Jafferkhani Baaj within the Indore Gharana. Born in 1986 into a family with a profound musical heritage, he commenced his training under the rigorous guidance of his father, Pandit Hara Shankar Bhattacharya. He subsequently refined his artistry under the direct mentorship of his "dadaguru," the legendary Padmabhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan, from whom he inherited a style renowned for its technical brilliance and aesthetic depth. 

Deepsankar’s artistry is distinguished by the defining features of the Jafferkhani Baaj, including lahak (a delicate echo effect), chapka anga (multiple notes in a single stroke), and advanced tantrakari (instrumental techniques). He also incorporates a lyrical, vocal quality into his playing, directly influenced by his mother, Smt. Parul Bhattacharya, a disciple of the renowned vocalist Pt. A.T. Kanan. This synthesis of dynamic melody and expressive vocalism has established him as a prominent figure among contemporary sitarists. 

An "A-Grade" artist of All India Radio, Deepsankar has received numerous honours, including the Sur-Moni title, gold medals from the Baba Harballav Music Competition, and the Ravi Kopikar Memorial Award. He also holds a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree, demonstrating a rare integration of academic rigour and artistic commitment. His performances have been acclaimed on international stages such as the NCPA Mumbai, Salt Lake Music Festival, the Indian Consulate in New York, and in major European cities. As a dedicated educator, he sustains the tradition through his organisation, Madhyami, thereby ensuring the continued vitality of the Jafferkhani legacy.
