Deepika Reddy

Deepika Reddy was born in Hyderabad into a family engaged in the arts. Her mother, Radhika Reddy, was a classical dancer who performed a leading role in the ballet Chitrangada at the inauguration of Ravindra Bharathi in 1961. Deepika began learning dance at the age of six and made her stage debut in 1976 at Ravindra Bharathi. Her early training in Kuchipudi was under Smt. Sumathi Kaushal, followed by specialized and sustained instruction under Vempati Chinna Satyam, one of the central figures in the modern institutionalization of Kuchipudi.

Her professional career developed across performance, choreography, and teaching. In 2000, she established Deepanjali in Hyderabad to preserve and transmit the Kuchipudi tradition. Through this institution, she has trained several generations of students, many of whom have gone on to perform in India and abroad. The school also extends training to children from underprivileged backgrounds, integrating pedagogy with social outreach.

As a performer, Deepika Reddy has appeared at major cultural and heritage venues in India, including Khajuraho, Konark, Hampi, the Thousand Pillar Temple, Ramappa, Mahabalipuram, and Golconda. Her recent appearances include performances at the Ayodhya Temple in 2024 and the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025. Internationally, she has participated in festivals and cultural programs in Germany, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, France, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and other countries, including performances at institutions such as the Bolshoi Theatre and the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Her choreographic work includes dance-dramas such as Shiva Satheeyam, Santhi Jeevanam, and Sthri Trayam. Alongside stage activity, she has conducted workshops, lecture-demonstrations, and seminars at festivals and academic platforms in India and overseas.

Deepika Reddy has also been engaged in cultural administration and advisory roles. She served as Chairperson of the Telangana State Sangeet Natak Akademi from July 2022 to December 2023 and has been a member of the Governing Council of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Her committee roles include participation in selection panels for state awards, national festivals such as Khajuraho, Doordarshan grading, and women’s honors in Telangana. She has also served on the Regional Film Censor Board, as a jury member for the Nandi State Film Awards, and as Chairperson of the Cultural Committee of the International Children’s Film Festival.

Her honors include the Kala Ratna from the Government of Andhra Pradesh (2007), the Nritya Choodamani from Krishna Gana Sabha (2014), the Telangana State Government Award (2016), and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Kuchipudi (2017). In 2026, she was conferred the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
