Ravindra Bharathi

Ravindra Bharathi is a landmark cultural auditorium in Hyderabad, Telangana, created to serve the artistic and cultural needs of the region. The foundation stone was laid on 23 March 1960 by Bezawada Gopala Reddy, and the building was designed by Mohammed Fayazuddin, an alumnus of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London. Constructed by the Government of Andhra Pradesh during the birth centenary celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore, the auditorium was inaugurated on 11 May 1961 by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Its inaugural program featured Tagore’s Mukta Dhara, presented by the Osmania University Dramatic Club.

For decades, Ravindra Bharathi has been maintained by the state government and has remained a focal point for cultural activity. In 2005, after more than forty years of service, the auditorium underwent a major renovation. The interiors, lighting, acoustics, air-conditioning, stage, and green rooms were upgraded, and the seating area was completely refurbished. The exteriors, landscaping, parking areas, and visitor facilities were also improved, giving the venue a modern and functional character while retaining its cultural identity.

The auditorium is administered by the Department of Culture of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, and its facilities are available for public cultural programs. Ravindra Bharathi has a plinth area of about 2,295 square yards and a seating capacity of 1,104. The main stage measures approximately 105 feet in width, 48 feet in depth, and 38 feet in height, making it suitable for large-scale productions. The building consists of three halls: a main hall that accommodates around 1,000 people and two smaller halls with seating capacities of 150 and 112. The entire complex is air-conditioned and Wi-Fi enabled, and an online booking system was introduced to simplify access for organisers.

Over the years, Ravindra Bharathi has hosted countless concerts, dance recitals, plays, festivals, and cultural celebrations. Its golden jubilee in 2010 featured performances by leading artists, and large-scale events such as the 125-day cultural festival in 2016 and the month-long “Salam-E-Telangana” programme in 2018 reflect its continuing relevance. Today, Ravindra Bharathi stands as a living centre of the performing arts in Hyderabad, bridging tradition and the present, and offering a dignified stage for music, dance, theatre, and literary expression.
