Biography

Chiranjit Mukherjee is a tabla player, percussionist, and teacher, and a senior disciple of Pandit Kumar Bose. As a professional musician, he has dedicated more than two decades to the practice, performance, and teaching of Indian classical rhythm. His journey with tabla began at an early age and gradually grew into a lifelong commitment to both art and education.

He holds a Master of Arts in Instrumental Music from Rabindra Bharati University. This academic training gave him a strong foundation in theory as well as performance, allowing him to approach music with a balance between discipline and creativity. His understanding of rhythm, structure, and form is shaped by both classroom learning and long years of stage experience.

Chiranjit has appeared at many reputed festivals in India and abroad. His concert journey includes performances across the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Europe. These global stages have expanded his musical vision and strengthened his ability to communicate rhythm across cultures. Each performance adds to his understanding of how Indian classical percussion connects with diverse audiences.

Teaching remains central to his identity. Over the years, he has trained students of all age groups and skill levels. His method focuses on building a strong base in tala, hand technique, and improvisation, while also introducing learners to the cultural and historical roots of tabla. He adapts every lesson to the pace and ability of the student, ensuring steady growth and confidence. His classes are available both online and offline, making learning accessible to students across the world. He combines traditional teaching with modern tools such as whiteboard demonstrations and structured presentations, helping students clearly grasp rhythm, composition, and performance.

For students seeking formal recognition, he also provides examination facilities under Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigarh University, enabling learners to earn accredited certifications alongside practical training.

His active performance life reflects his standing in the classical music community. Internationally, he has shared platforms with Sarod maestro Pandit Partho Sarodi and renowned sitarist Paul Livingstone in Los Angeles. In India, he has performed at the Bishnupur Music Festival with vocalist Deborshee Bhattacharjee, with harmonium accompaniment by Jyotirmoy Banerjee. He has also appeared at the prestigious Dakshini Sangeet Sammelani in Kolkata, accompanying noted vocalist Bishnupriya Chakrabarty, with harmonium support by Debasish Adhikary.

He is further associated with major cultural presentations such as Vasanth Agaman, presented by Sarathi, the Classical Dance and Music Group from Toronto, at Gyan Manch, Kolkata, where Indian music and dance come together on one stage.

It is about building a lifelong relationship with rhythm. He believes every beat carries meaning, and through practice, patience, and passion, students can discover their own musical voice. His work continues to inspire learners and audiences while carrying forward the living tradition of Indian classical percussion.
