Biswajit Roy Chowdhury

Pandit Biswajit Roy Chowdhury is a distinguished sarod maestro who holds a unique position in Hindustani classical music through his integration of instrumental and vocal traditions. Born in 1956, he began his musical journey under his father, Shri Ranjit Roy Chowdhury, before his talents were recognised by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, who accepted him as a disciple in 1978. A defining chapter of his career began in the early 1980s when he studied intensively with the vocal titan Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur. This rare lineage has made him perhaps the only sarod player able to faithfully reproduce the complex compositions and nuanced "khayal gayaki" of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, while maintaining the technical integrity of the Senia Bangash tradition. 

His artistry is celebrated for deep melodic exploration and technical brilliance, which has graced the stages of India’s most prestigious festivals, including the Tansen Festival in Gwalior, the Harvallabh Sangeet Samaroha, and the Vishnu Digambar Jayanti. As an "A-Grade" artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, his performances show a serious and soulful commitment to the raga’s essence. His international standing was further cemented when the French government conferred the Maurice Chevalier award on him. Beyond performing, he is a respected pedagogue who shares his knowledge at the Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi, ensuring the rare blends of his musical heritage are passed to future generations.
