Biography
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was a legendary Hindustani classical vocalist whose artistry left a permanent imprint on Indian music. Born on 2 April 1902 in Kasur, Punjab (then British India), he belonged to a distinguished lineage of the Patiala–Kasur Gharana. His early training began at the age of five under his uncle Kale Khan and later under his father, Ali Baksh Khan Kasuri, both respected musicians. This rigorous grounding shaped his exceptional command over raga, rhythm, and voice modulation.
Over time, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan evolved a distinctive musical style that blended elements of dhrupad, Jaipur gharana’s melodic movement, and Gwalior gharana’s embellishments. While deeply rooted in classical discipline, he believed in communicating directly with audiences, often presenting concise and emotionally resonant raga expositions. He became especially admired for his interpretations of ragas such as Bhupali, Hameer, Jaijaiwanti, Adana, and Jaunpuri. Under the pen name Sabrang, he composed numerous bandishes that remain widely performed.
Following the Partition of India, he initially returned to Kasur but later settled permanently in India in 1957 after acquiring Indian citizenship. He lived and performed in major cultural centers, including Mumbai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. Although he largely stayed away from cinema, he made a historic exception by lending his voice to two khayal-based compositions in the film Mughal-e-Azam, composed by Naushad—recordings that became iconic.
Despite suffering ill health and partial paralysis in his later years, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan continued to perform with support from his son Munawar Ali Khan until his passing on 23 April 1968 in Hyderabad. Awarded the Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi honors, he remains revered as a master whose music balanced classical depth with emotional immediacy. His influence continues through his family lineage, disciples, and the enduring popularity of his recordings.
