Biography
Pandit Ashim Chowdhury is an Indian classical sitarist associated with the Imdadkhani (Etawah) Gharana, one of the most influential lineages in Hindustani instrumental music. Known for his refined interpretation of ragas and the distinctive Gandhar Pancham style, he blends the expressive gayaki ang (vocal style of raga presentation) with the precision of instrumental technique, creating a balanced and nuanced musical approach.
He began his musical journey under the guidance of his father, Shibu Chowdhury, a tabla player who introduced him to the fundamentals of rhythm and music. At an early age, he continued his training under Ustad Benjamin Gomes and later became a disciple of Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee in 1985. Under Mukherjee’s mentorship, he developed a disciplined and structured approach to raga development influenced by the aesthetics of the khayal tradition.
Pandit Ashim Chowdhury is a top-grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan and is also an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), through which he has performed internationally to promote Indian classical music. His recognitions include the West Bengal State Music Academy Award, the “Surmani” title from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai, and the “Sangeet Alankar” from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. Alongside his musical career, he holds a master's degree in mathematics and an MBA in banking and finance, though he chose to dedicate himself to the practice and performance of Indian classical music.
