Biography

Anuradha Pal is internationally recognized as one of the leading tabla virtuosos of her generation. A pioneering figure, she was recorded in the Limca Book of Records (1991) as the world’s first professional female tabla player. Over a career spanning decades, she has presented traditional tabla solos in multiple gharanas while also working extensively in fusion, contemporary percussion, and composition.

Trained under the guidance of Ustad Alla Rakha and Zakir Hussain, she began performing at a young age and went on to accompany leading maestros, including Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. She has performed more than 5,000 concerts across 40 countries, appearing at international festivals such as Woodstock, SAARC, CHOGM, and the Darbar Festival.

In 1996, she founded Stree Shakti, the world’s first all-female Hindustani–Carnatic ensemble, which debuted at the WOMAD Festival in 1999. Over 25 years, the group has provided platforms to numerous women musicians. Beyond performance, she has created thematic works such as Ramayan-on-Tabla, Shiv-Shakti, and Epic Tabla Stories, and composed music across classical, spiritual, folk, EDM, and film genres, including for the film Gaja Gamini by M. F. Husain.

Anuradha Pal is also active in education and outreach. She launched one of the earliest digital tabla courses in 2003 and mentors students globally through APCA—Aapka Gurukul. She has taught and conducted workshops at institutions including Harvard, MIT, and the New England Conservatory.

Her recognitions include the President’s First Ladies’ Award (2018), the Maharashtra Sanskrutik Puraskar, and honors from the Government of India. Graded ‘Top Vidushi’ by Prasar Bharati and recognized by ICCR, she continues to balance performance, pedagogy, and social initiatives through her APCF Foundation, reflecting her broader commitment to cultural empowerment and community engagement.
