Biography
Alokparna is a Kathak dancer, choreographer, teacher, and actress who runs her own group and institute, Pushpak. Among her many creative roles, the Kathak solo recital remains closest to her heart. She believes that the depth of Kathak is best expressed in a solo format, where rhythm, emotion, and storytelling come together in their purest form.
She began her training at the tender age of five. Her early lessons were under Sri Pradipta Neogi, after which she underwent long and disciplined riyaz under the guidance of the renowned Kathak exponent Dr. Malabika Mitra. Through years of dedicated practice, she absorbed the essence of two major Kathak traditions—the Jaipur and Lucknow gharanas. The strength, clarity, and rhythmic power of Jaipur, combined with the softness, elegance, and expressive beauty of Lucknow, are seamlessly blended in her performances.
Alokparna is a senior diploma holder from Prayag Sangeet Siksha Samity, Allahabad, and a gold medalist from the Society of Rabindra Bharati University. Her art has also found a place on Calcutta Television, where she appears for selected performances. Connoisseurs of dance have warmly appreciated her work in India and abroad, recognizing her as a sincere and accomplished Kathak artist.
Her journey includes notable performances such as the Kathak Festival Naivedya, curated by Sri Sandeep Neogy at Uttarpara GanaBhavan on 1st November, where she presented a Kathak solo. She was accompanied by Sri Subir Thakur on tabla, Sri Sandip Neogy on sitar, and Smt. Kaberi Dutta Majumder on vocals. She presented a solo Kathak recital at Dakkhini Sangeet Sammelan at Niranjan Sadan, accompanied by Sri Subhajyoti Guha on tabla, Sri Sunando Mukherjee on sarod, and Smt. Kaberi Dutta Majumder on vocals. It was the first performance of the day, and the audience’s presence was deeply cherished.
Another important milestone was her Jamshedpur concert at the Michael John Auditorium, dedicated to the memory of Guru Sri Chandrakant Apte. Performing a full-length concert for one to one and a half hours reminded her of earlier times, when artists explored their complete capacity on stage. In today’s fast-paced schedule of short performances, such long concerts are rare, yet they remain vital for true artistic expression. The concert unfolded as envisioned, filled with audience love and blessings.
Alokparna holds a master’s degree in English literature. She has thoughtfully merged her academic understanding with her artistic mission. Every aspect of her education supports her goal of performing, teaching, and spreading Kathak in a meaningful and accessible way. Through Pushpak, her stage work, and her disciplined practice, she continues to preserve tradition while presenting Kathak with clarity, sincerity, and lasting impact.
