Subhajyoti Guha

Sri Subhajyoti Guha is a distinguished tabla player from Kolkata whose training and artistic journey are firmly rooted in the classical traditions of North Indian percussion. Born into an educated and musically inclined family, he began learning tabla at the age of five under the guidance of his father, Dr. Smriti Ranjan Guha. His father was a disciple of the late Ustad Keramatullah Khan, a revered exponent of the Farrukhabad gharana, which laid a strong foundational influence on Subhajyoti’s musical upbringing.

A few years later, Subhajyoti Guha came under the tutelage of Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, one of the most respected tabla maestros of his generation. Pandit Chatterjee, himself a disciple of Ustad Keramatullah Khan and Ustad Alla Rakha of the Punjab gharana, played a crucial role in shaping Subhajyoti’s depth of understanding, technique, and aesthetic sensibility. Under his long-term guidance, Subhajyoti developed a balanced approach that reflects both gharana traditions with clarity and discipline.

His dedication to tabla has been recognized through numerous awards and distinctions. These include the President’s Award from All India Radio (1989), the Dover Lane Talent Search Award (1990–91), the Hirendra Kumar Ganguly Award from the West Bengal State Academy of Performing Arts (1993), and the Taal Mani Award from Sur Sringar Samsad, Mumbai (1996). He was also conferred the Sangeet Visharad degree by Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, in 1997.

Today, Sri Subhajyoti Guha holds the status of an ‘A’ Grade tabla artist with All India Radio and Television, reflecting his standing as a respected performer within the Hindustani classical music tradition.
