Biography

Alap Desai is an Indian singer, composer, and tabla player based in Mumbai, associated with film, television, and independent music. He comes from a musical family and is the son of vocalists Hema Desai and Ashit Desai.

He began his musical training at a young age and studied tabla under Ustad Allah Rakha Khan for several years. His foundation in Indian classical and semi-classical music informs his work across multiple genres.

As a composer, Alap Desai has contributed to films and television projects, including Natsamrat (Gujarati), Miss U Mister (Marathi), Meera, Mohalla Assi, and television series such as Upanishad Ganga and Surajya Sanhita. He has also worked on independent music releases, including projects like Pehchaan and Taalash.

His musical repertoire includes ghazals, devotional compositions, and contemporary works. He has released tracks such as “Shri Krishna Govind,” “Hare Rama Hare Krishna,” and “Aigiri Nandini,” and has collaborated with artists including Hariharan, Suresh Wadkar, and Kavita Krishnamurti.

In recent years, he was nominated for the ITA Award (2024) in the Best Music Composer (OTT) category for the film Maharaj. Alap Desai continues to work across performance, composition, and recording, contributing to both classical-based and popular music formats.
