Kavita Krishnamurthy (born Sharda Krishnamurthy) is one of India's most respected playback and classical singers, with a career of over five decades. She grew up in New Delhi in a Tamil family and started learning Hindustani music at a young age from Balram Puri. Her talent was recognized early through awards and music competitions, marking the beginning of her journey as a promising young vocalist.
While studying economics at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, her professional journey began. She was introduced to leading figures of Indian cinema and music. Starting with her first recording in 1971, she soon collaborated with leading composers like Hemant Kumar, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, R.D. Burman, and A.R. Rahman. Her songs in hit Bollywood films such as Mr. India, 1942: A Love Story, Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Devdas helped establish her as one of the most popular voices in Indian cinema. She has collaborated with major vocalists across eras and has sung in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Odia, Konkani, Nepali, and many other languages.
She performed with many genres of musicians, and her music has taken her to major stages around the world. She has been honored with the Padma Shri, multiple Filmfare Awards, and an honorary doctorate for her achievements.
