Biography
Abhijit Banerjee is an accomplished Hindustani classical tabla player, educator, and composer. A senior disciple of Jnan Prakash Ghosh, he received early training from Tushar Kanti Bose and Manik Pal before being accepted by his guru. Alongside tabla, he studied vocal music with Ajoy Chakraborty and violin under Annapurna Devi, shaping his broad musical perspective.
Belonging to the Farrukhabad tradition, he has accompanied leading maestros including Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Banerjee, Jasraj, Parveen Sultana, and Shivkumar Sharma. His approach to accompaniment emphasizes anticipation, melodic sensitivity, and maintaining gharana identity while supporting the main artist.
As a soloist, Banerjee focuses on clarity of bols, structural development, and musicality rather than speed alone. He stresses both “hand riyaz” and “mind riyaz,” highlighting reflection and rhythmic imagination as essential to mastery.
He founded the Dhwani Academy of Percussion Music, where he teaches tabla and percussion. Beyond classical performance, he leads the ensemble Tarang and is associated with the raga-jazz group Arohi Ensemble, exploring fusion rooted firmly in raga and tala frameworks.
A graduate in English literature with postgraduate studies in journalism, Banerjee combines scholarship with performance, contributing thoughtfully to both traditional and contemporary musical dialogues.
