About Uttarpara Jaykrishna Public Library

Uttarpara Jaykrishna Public Library, established in 1859 by social reformer Jaykrishna Mukherjee, is regarded as India’s first free public library and one of Asia’s earliest public libraries. Located on the banks of the Hooghly River in Uttarpara, West Bengal, the institution houses rare manuscripts, historic books, and archives. The library is also renowned for hosting literary gatherings, cultural programs, and classical music events, including performances organised by Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra.
