Sree Vaikundam Kalyana Mandapam

Vaikuntha Mandapam, widely known as the Thennur Mandapam, is a revered ritual space situated in Vandiyur village, close to the banks of the Vaigai River in Tamil Nadu. This mandapam holds a special place in Hindu tradition as the site where, according to legend, Lord Vishnu in the form of Kallalagar liberated the sage Manduka Maharishi from a curse. The sage, believed to have been reborn as a frog, received divine grace at this very spot, which has given the mandapam its enduring spiritual significance.

The structure was commissioned in 1653 CE during the reign of King Thirumalai Nayak of the Nayak dynasty. Under his rule, the ritual associated with this legend was formally relocated to this location, and the mandapam was constructed to serve as a permanent setting for the sacred event. Since then, Vaikuntha Mandapam has become the focal point of one of the most significant moments of the annual Chithirai Festival.

During this festival, Lord Kallalagar journeys from Alagar Hill to Madurai, and his arrival at Vaikuntha Mandapam symbolizes the act of redemption and blessing. Thousands of devotees gather to witness this moment, which represents compassion, release from suffering, and divine intervention. The mandapam thus functions not merely as an architectural structure but as a living ritual space where mythology, faith, and community converge.

It is important to distinguish this site from the Vaikuntha Perumal temples of Kanchipuram and Uthiramerur, which are Pallava-era temples known for their inscriptions and architecture. The Vaikuntha Mandapam at Thennur is unique in its purpose and identity, created specifically to commemorate a sacred episode linked to Kallalagar and the Chithirai tradition.

Today, Vaikuntha Mandapam continues to serve as a powerful symbol of Tamil devotional culture, preserving a centuries-old narrative through annual ritual, collective memory, and living faith.
