About Lake Club
Lake Club, Kolkata, traces its origins to 1929, when a group led by national leader Deshapriya Jatindra Mohan Sengupta set out to establish a rowing club for Indians. The club secured land at Dhakuria Lake on lease and began construction soon after. The foundation stone was laid by Maharani Indira Devi of Coochbehar in 1931, and the clubhouse was inaugurated in 1932. Through the early efforts of figures such as Sir Biren Mookerjee and Lt. Col. R. N. Chopra, the club developed a strong organizational base and became known for its rowing programs and regattas.
By the mid-1930s, Lake Club had established a regular calendar of spring, Puja, and inter-club regattas, contributing significantly to the city’s rowing culture. Today, the venue is recognized as a historic lakeside space in Kolkata, used for rowing, community gatherings, cultural events, and recreational activities.
