Experimental Theatre
The Experimental Theatre at NCPA, Mumbai, is a modular black box performance venue that opened in 1986. Designed for intimate productions, it hosts theatre, music, and dance performances with flexible staging and natural acoustics.
About Experimental Theatre
The Experimental Theatre is designed as a black box performance space, following the principles of Swiss stage designer Adolphe Appia. Its interior features dark, neutral walls that create a visually minimal environment, allowing audiences to focus entirely on the performance. The adaptable design encourages directors and choreographers to experiment with staging, lighting, and audience placement.
A key feature of the venue is its modular flexibility. Movable seating units and modular wooden platforms allow the stage and audience layout to be reconfigured for different types of productions, including theater, classical music recitals, dance performances, and interdisciplinary works. Depending on the arrangement, the theater can accommodate approximately 264 to 300 audience members, creating an intimate setting between performers and viewers.
The theater is also designed with natural acoustics suitable for unamplified performances, enabling individual instruments and voices to be clearly heard. Technical facilities include a stage measuring up to 9.7 meters in width and 7.3 meters in depth, a grid height of about 9 meters, and a control room located behind a glass observation window. Additional facilities within the complex include conference rooms, a museum space, and a large foyer used for gatherings and cultural events.
