The Duke's Hall

The Duke’s Hall is a concert venue located within the Royal Academy of Music in London, United Kingdom. The Royal Academy of Music established the hall as a performance space for classical music, including Western classical and Indian classical traditions. The venue occupies a dedicated wing of the academy’s campus on Marylebone Road in the City of Westminster.

The Duke’s Hall opened in 1911 as part of the academy’s expansion under the directorship of Sir Alexander Mackenzie. Architects John Belcher and J.J. Joass designed the hall in the Edwardian Baroque style. The space seats approximately 400 audience members and features a proscenium stage, a pipe organ, and acoustics tailored for chamber and solo performances. The Royal Academy of Music operates the venue for student recitals, public concerts, and guest artist performances.

Indian classical musicians have performed at The Duke’s Hall since the mid-20th century. Sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar gave a recital there in 1968, accompanied by tabla player Alla Rakha. The concert formed part of the academy’s World Music Series, which the institution initiated to broaden its programming. In 1985, sarod player Amjad Ali Khan performed with his sons Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan, presenting a program of Hindustani classical compositions. The hall hosted the London debut of vocalist Kaushiki Chakraborty in 2003, where she performed khayal and thumri repertoire.

The Duke’s Hall does not release commercial recordings of its performances. The Royal Academy of Music archives select concerts, though access requires permission from the institution. The venue lacks a dedicated record label. Notable performances remain documented in concert programs, press reviews, and academy publications. The hall continues to serve as a primary space for the academy’s Indian classical music curriculum, which the institution introduced in the 1990s under the guidance of visiting faculty.
