Alipore Central Correctional Home is a nationally important heritage site in the heart of Kolkata. Built in 1906 and spread across 15.2 acres, this Grade I heritage complex stands alongside the historic Presidency Jail. Known for its iconic brick-red walls, the campus once housed many of India’s greatest freedom fighters, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Chittaranjan Das. After functioning as a correctional home until 2019, it has been transformed into the Alipore Independence Museum. Today, it serves as a powerful memorial, preserving the stories, struggles, and sacrifices of India’s freedom movement.

About Alipore Museum

The Alipore Central Correctional Home is a national historic landmark located in central Kolkata. Constructed in 1906 during the colonial era, this 116-year-old complex covers nearly 15.2 acres and stands as one of the most significant heritage sites in the city. Along with the Presidency Jail, it is listed as a Grade I heritage structure. Easily recognised by its striking brick-red walls, the campus lies beside Tolly’s Nullah and contains several historic structures, including the central watchtower, the Jail Press Building, the hospital block, and more than a dozen former prison cells and wards.

This prison once held many of India’s most revered freedom fighters, such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Chittaranjan Das, Dinesh Gupta, and Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. It remained an active correctional home until 2019, after which all inmates were shifted to Baruipur. From being a silent witness to colonial oppression, the site has now been transformed into a memorial and museum dedicated to India’s struggle for independence.

The Alipore Independence Museum presents the story of India’s freedom movement during British rule through paintings, photographs, maps, installations, statues, letters, and rare artefacts. The campus also includes public facilities such as food kiosks, a cafeteria, and leisure spaces, making it a cultural and educational destination within the Alipore Green City zone.

Key areas within the museum include the Entry Gate Office Building, which houses the information centre, ticketing area, administrative rooms, and a replica coffee house on the first floor. The Gallows Area honours the freedom fighters who were executed here, with their names permanently inscribed. The Hospital Building serves as the main exhibition space, featuring Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rishi Aurobindo, Dinesh Gupta, women martyrs of Bengal, and a historical journey from the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to Independence in 1947. A dedicated Light and Sound Show further brings alive the lives and sacrifices of India’s heroes.

Today, the Alipore Central Correctional Home stands not as a prison, but as a living monument to courage, resistance, and national memory.
