Bande Ali Khan

Ustad Bande Ali Khan is one of the most important figures in Hindustani classical music. He came from the famous Tansen family and was a master of the Rudra Veena, also called the Been. His influence changed instrumental music, shifting it from strict, rhythmic patterns to a more lyrical and vocal-inspired style.

He worked as a court musician in several princely states, but his most important and lasting role was in Indore State, supported by Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar II. There, he founded the Indore Gharana, known for its deep sound and slow, careful development called Vilambit. Bande Ali Khan was famous for his remarkable breath control, which he applied to the Veena, and for playing long, smooth glides called "Meends" with a single stroke. People say his music was so moving it could bring listeners to tears. He moved away from the traditional Dhrupad style of Veena playing and added features from Khayal, making the instrument more expressive and flexible.

He had a strong personality and deep spiritual devotion. Often practising alone or playing music at Sufi shrines. He married the daughters of the famous Haddu Khan of Gwalior, which connected two major musical families in North India. His influence was so great that both the Kirana Gharana, through Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, and the Dagarvani Dhrupad tradition recognise his shaping of their styles.
