Vernon Hills is a suburban village in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The municipality lies approximately 30 miles north of Chicago and forms part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Incorporated in 1958, Vernon Hills developed from a rural farming community into a planned residential and commercial hub. The village spans 7.8 square miles and had a population of 27,122 as of the 2020 U.S. Census.

The area’s early history traces to Potawatomi settlements prior to European contact. German and Polish immigrants established farms in the 19th century, with dairy and truck farming dominating the local economy until the mid-20th century. Post-World War II suburban expansion prompted residential development, accelerated by the construction of Interstate 94 in the 1960s. The village adopted a home-rule government in 1987, granting it expanded authority over local zoning and taxation.

Vernon Hills hosts the corporate headquarters of CDW, a Fortune 500 technology products and services provider, and Rust-Oleum, a coatings manufacturer founded in 1921. The village’s retail sector centers on Hawthorn Mall (opened 1973), a regional shopping destination with over 120 stores. Educational institutions include Adlai E. Stevenson High School (District 125), consistently ranked among Illinois’s top public schools, and the College of Lake County’s Southlake Campus.

Cultural and recreational sites include the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex, a 130-acre facility with sports fields and an indoor ice arena, and the Vernon Hills Historical Museum, which preserves artifacts from the village’s agricultural era. The Des Plaines River Trail bisects the community, offering 31 miles of multi-use paths. Annual events include the Vernon Hills Fest (held since 1992), featuring live music, food vendors, and fireworks.

Transportation infrastructure includes two Metra commuter rail stations (Vernon Hills and Prairie Crossing) on the North Central Service line, providing direct access to Chicago’s Ogilvie Transportation Center. Major roadways include Interstate 94, U.S. Route 45, and Illinois Route 60. The village operates a free Vernon Hills Trolley service connecting residential areas to commercial zones during peak shopping seasons.

Demographically, Vernon Hills reflects a diverse population with a median household income of $112,345 (2020 estimate), exceeding both state and national averages. The village’s racial composition includes 58.6% White, 31.2% Asian, 5.4% Hispanic or Latino, and 2.9% Black or African American residents. Over 40% of residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, aligning with the community’s emphasis on education and professional employment.

Notable former or current residents include Rahm Emanuel, 55th Mayor of Chicago (2011–2019) and White House Chief of Staff (2009–2010), who lived in Vernon Hills during his early political career. The village also served as the filming location for scenes in the 1986 John Hughes film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, including the exterior of the former Glenbrook North High School (doubling as the fictional Shermer High School).

Environmental initiatives include a Rain Barrel Program promoting water conservation and participation in the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Greenest Region Compact, a sustainability agreement among Chicagoland municipalities. The village’s Comprehensive Plan 2040, adopted in 2018, outlines goals for mixed-use development, transit-oriented design, and open-space preservation.
