Suwanee is a city in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population reached 20,803. The city forms part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and lies approximately 30 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. Incorporated in 1925, Suwanee developed as a railroad depot community along the Southern Railway line. The name derives from a Cherokee word often translated as \"echo river,\" though the exact origin remains debated among historians.

The city gained recognition in the late 20th century for its planned urban development and public art initiatives. In 2005, the Suwanee City Center opened as a mixed-use downtown project featuring a 10-acre park, amphitheater, and civic buildings. The Suwanee Festival, an annual event launched in 1981, draws regional attendance with live music, crafts, and food vendors. The festival typically occurs in September at Suwanee Town Center Park.

Suwanee’s cultural institutions include the Suwanee Performing Arts Center, a 350-seat venue completed in 2017 that hosts theater, dance, and concert performances. The city also maintains the Suwanee Public Arts Program, which commissions sculptures and murals for public spaces. Notable works include the 2014 bronze sculpture Spirit of Suwanee by artist Gary Alsum, installed at Town Center Park.

Economic growth in Suwanee accelerated after the 1990s with the expansion of technology and healthcare sectors. Major employers include the Gwinnett Medical Center–Duluth campus and corporations like NCR Corporation, which relocated its headquarters to a nearby unincorporated area in 2009. The city’s school system operates under the Gwinnett County Public Schools district, with Suwanee Elementary School and North Gwinnett High School serving local students.

Suwanee’s geography features rolling hills and proximity to the Chattahoochee River basin. The Suwanee Greenway, a 4.3-mile paved trail completed in 2003, connects residential areas to parks and commercial districts. Adjacent natural sites include the Simpsonwood Park, a 223-acre preserve with hiking trails and wetlands, managed in partnership with Gwinnett County.

The racial composition comprises approximately 52% White, 30% Asian, 10% Black or African American, and 8% Hispanic or Latino residents. Suwanee received the Georgia Municipal Association’s City of Excellence Award in 2007 for its governance and community programs.
