Seattle

Seattle is a coastal city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and the largest metropolitan center in Washington state. The city serves as a cultural hub for Indian classical music in North America, hosting annual festivals, workshops and performances since the late 20th century. Venues such as the Meany Center for the Performing Arts, Town Hall Seattle and the University of Washington’s Ethnomusicology Division have regularly presented concerts by Indian classical artists.

Notable performances in Seattle include a 1988 sitar recital by Ravi Shankar at the Paramount Theatre, accompanied by tabla player Ananda Gopal Bandopadhyay. The concert featured raga Yaman and Mishra Pilu as central compositions. In 2004, vocalists Kishori Amonkar and Ulhas Kashalkar performed at Meany Hall under the auspices of the Seattle Indian Music Society, with Kashalkar presenting raga Bhairav> and Jog. The organization later hosted sarod player Amjad Ali Khan in 2011, where he performed raga Shahana> and Madhukauns> alongside his sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash.

The University of Washington’s ethnomusicology program has documented and archived field recordings of local Indian classical performances since the 1990s. Faculty member Laurel Sercombe conducted research on the transmission of Dhrupad in the Pacific Northwest, publishing findings in the Journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology in 2007. Seattle-based nonprofit Rasika Cultural Foundation, founded in 2003, organizes an annual Monsoon Festival that includes Hindustani and Carnatic music workshops. The 2019 edition featured veena exponent Jayanthi Kumaresh and mridangam artist Patri Satish Kumar in a Carnatic ensemble performance.

Local artists such as sitarist Gourisankar Karmakar and vocalists Anjali Natraj and Abhijit Banerjee have maintained active teaching studios in the Seattle area since the 2000s. Karmakar released Raga Reflections in 2015, a studio album recorded in Seattle that included raga Bageshri> and Kedar. The album featured tabla accompaniment by Nitin Mittal and tanpura by Seattle-based musician Priya Shankar. Carnatic violinist Kala Ramnath performed at the Kirkland Performance Center in 2017, presenting compositions in raga Kapi> and Todi with mridangam support from Poovalur Sriji.

Seattle’s Indian classical music scene intersects with its technology sector through initiatives like the Raga Labs> project, launched in 2020 by Microsoft Research in collaboration with local musicians. The project developed interactive tools for raga analysis and was demonstrated at the 2021 Seattle Interactive Conference. Exact attendance figures for most performances remain undocumented, and comprehensive archival records prior to 2000 are incomplete.
