Santacruz

Santacruz is a suburban locality in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It serves as a cultural and residential hub within the city’s Western Line corridor. The area gained prominence in the 20th century as a center for Marathi theater, literary gatherings and Hindustani classical music performances. Venues such as the Santacruz Gymkhana and Chandrahas Halgekar Sabhagruha have hosted recitals by artists including Kishori Amonkar, Bhimsen Joshi and Jasraj. The locality’s proximity to the Sangeet Research Academy in adjacent Chembur further reinforced its association with classical traditions.

In 1987, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) expanded its outreach programs to Santacruz, organizing baithak-style concerts in private residences and community halls. Notable among these was a 1990 jugalbandi between sitarist Ravi Shankar and sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, held at a local auditorium. The event was recorded by HMV (now Saregama) and released in 1991 as a double LP titled Raga Pilu & Raga Sindhi Bhairavi. The album featured two extended improvisations, with Shankar’s alat in Pilu spanning 28 minutes. Accompaniment included Allarakha on tabla and Kartick Kumar on tanpura.

The 1990s saw Santacruz emerge as a recording site for independent classical labels. In 1994, vocalist Veena Sahasrabuddhe recorded her album Bandish ki Baat at a studio in Santacruz East. Released by Magnasound, the cassette featured rare khayal compositions in ragas such as Shuddha Sarang and Bageshri>, with harmonium support from Appa Jalgaonkar. The liner notes documented the sessions as part of the Gharana Revival Series, though specific dates remain unverified.

By the early 2000s, Santacruz’s role shifted toward music education. The Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyalaya opened a branch in 2003, offering courses in vocal and instrumental classical training. The institution’s annual Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav satellite events occasionally took place at Santacruz venues, including a 2006 performance by flutist Ronu Majumdar. Details of commercial releases from these events are not widely documented.

The locality’s connection to film music also intersects with classical traditions. Composer Jatin-Lalit recorded orchestral tracks for their 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge at Mehboob Studio in nearby Bandra but conducted preliminary raga-based arrangements in Santacruz rehearsal spaces. While no standalone classical album resulted, the soundtrack’s use of Raag Yaman and Raag Desh motifs reflected the area’s influence on fusion experiments.

Current data on active recording studios or performance archives in Santacruz is limited. The locality’s historical significance persists through oral accounts and sporadic revival concerts, though no dedicated documentation center exists as of 2024.
