Sacramento

Sacramento is a city in the U.S. state of California and serves as the state capital. Located at the confluence of the Sacramento River and the American River in Northern California’s Sacramento Valley, the city anchors a metropolitan area that includes Yolo, Placer, El Dorado, and Sutter counties. Founded in December 1848 by John Sutter Jr. during the California Gold Rush, Sacramento became a key commercial and agricultural hub due to its strategic river access. The city incorporated in 1850, making it one of California’s oldest municipalities.

The Sacramento region developed as a cultural crossroads with influences from Mexican, Chinese, and European immigrant communities. The Central Pacific Railroad established its western terminus in Sacramento in the 1860s, solidifying the city’s role in transcontinental trade. In contemporary contexts, Sacramento supports a diverse music scene with venues like the Crest Theatre (opened 1912) and the Ace of Spades (opened 2011), which host performances spanning jazz, rock, and world music. The city’s annual Sacramento Music Festival (established 1974) highlights traditional jazz, blues, and ragtime, while the Midtown Farmers Market features local folk and indie artists. Notable Sacramento-linked musicians include the funk band Tower of Power (formed 1968), jazz guitarist Joe Satriani (born 1956 in Westbury, New York, but raised in Sacramento), and hip-hop artist Mozzy (born 1987).

The Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1982, performs classical repertoire at the Community Center Theater, while the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts at UC Davis (opened 2002) presents international classical, dance, and experimental acts. The city’s historical Old Sacramento district preserves 19th-century architecture and hosts live period music, including gold rush-era folk and brass bands.
