About Noida
Noida (short for New Okhla Industrial Development Authority) is a planned city in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It lies within the National Capital Region (NCR) and borders Delhi to the northwest. The city was established on 17 April 1976 under the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development Act as part of an urban expansion initiative to decongest Delhi. The Master Plan of Noida was drafted by the French architect Michel Ecochard and later refined by the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi.
Noida functions as a commercial and industrial hub with a significant presence in information technology, electronics manufacturing, and media production. The city houses the headquarters of corporations such as HCL Technologies, Samsung India, and Dabur. It also hosts the Noida Film City, one of Asia’s largest integrated film production complexes, inaugurated in 1998. The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and Delhi Metro’s Blue and Aqua Lines connect the city to Delhi and neighboring regions.
Culturally, Noida features venues like the Shilp Haat craft market and the Stupa 18 Gallery, which promotes contemporary Indian art. The Noida Authority organizes the annual Noida Mahotsav, a multi-day festival celebrating local arts, cuisine, and commerce. Educational institutions in the city include the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (established 2001) and the Amity University Noida campus (established 2005).
The city’s infrastructure includes planned residential sectors, commercial zones, and green spaces such as the Noida Golf Course (designed by Peter Thomson in 1988) and Botanical Garden. Noida’s population exceeded 642,000 as per the 2011 Census of India, with projections indicating rapid growth due to migration for employment. The Noida Authority oversees urban planning, while law enforcement falls under the Gautam Buddha Nagar Police.
Notable landmarks include the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, a wetland reserve designated in 1990, and the Worlds of Wonder amusement park, opened in 2007. The city’s real estate sector expanded significantly in the 2000s, with high-rise developments along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. Air connectivity is provided via the nearby Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, approximately 30 kilometers away.
