Mohali

Mohali, officially known as Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, is a planned city in the Indian state of Punjab. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district. The city lies adjacent to Chandigarh and Panchkula, forming a part of the Chandigarh Trikuta (tricity) metropolitan area. The Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, commonly called the PCA Stadium, is a prominent landmark in Mohali and hosts international cricket matches, including the 1996 Cricket World Cup semi-final and multiple Indian Premier League (IPL) fixtures.

The city was conceived in the late 1960s as an extension of Chandigarh to accommodate industrial and residential growth. The Punjab government developed Mohali under the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA), modeling its infrastructure on Chandigarh’s grid layout. The Master Plan for Mohali was approved in 1983, emphasizing sector-based division, wide roads, and green belts. The city’s name was changed to Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar in 2012 in honor of the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, though \"Mohali\" remains in common usage.

Mohali emerged as a hub for information technology and biotechnology in the 2000s. The Indian School of Business (ISB) established its second campus in Mohali in 2012, offering postgraduate management programs. The city also houses the Punjab Biotechnology Incubator (PBTI) and multiple IT parks, including QuarkCity and IT City, which host domestic and multinational corporations. The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) opened its Mohali campus in 2007, focusing on scientific research and undergraduate education.

Cultural institutions in Mohali include the Mohali Stadium (for athletics), the Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan (a Sikh shrine commemorating the martyrdom of Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh), and the Rock Garden Phase 8, a sculpture park inspired by Chandigarh’s Rock Garden. The city’s proximity to Chandigarh provides access to additional cultural venues, such as the Tagore Theatre and the Government Museum and Art Gallery.

Transport infrastructure in Mohali includes the Chandigarh International Airport, located in the city’s Jhiurheri area, which operates domestic and international flights. The Mohali Railway Station, part of the Northern Railway zone, connects the city to major Indian rail networks. Road links include National Highway 205A and the Chandigarh-Mohali Border, facilitating movement within the tricity. The Mohali Metro project, proposed as an extension of Chandigarh Metro, remains under planning as of 2024.

Residential sectors in Mohali are numbered sequentially (e.g., Sector 66, Sector 70) and feature mixed-use development with commercial markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. Notable educational institutions include Chitkara University (established 2002), Rayat-Bahra University (2014), and Plaksha University (2021), a private institution focused on technology and entrepreneurship. The city’s healthcare sector includes multi-specialty hospitals such as Fortis Hospital Mohali and Max Super Speciality Hospital.

Demographically, Mohali experienced rapid population growth from 146,132 in 2001 to 176,152 in 2011, per the Census of India. The city’s economy relies on services, real estate, and light manufacturing, with a significant influx of migrants from neighboring states. Agricultural land surrounding Mohali has diminished due to urban expansion, though peripheral villages such as Kharar and Kurali retain rural characteristics.

Environmental challenges in Mohali include air pollution from vehicular emissions and construction, as well as groundwater depletion. The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) monitors industrial compliance, while afforestation drives and waste management initiatives address sustainability concerns. The city’s Suvidha Kendras (citizen service centers) provide digital governance for utilities and civic services.

As of 2024, Mohali continues to develop as a satellite city to Chandigarh, with ongoing projects in smart infrastructure, commercial hubs, and public transportation.
