McLean

McLean is a suburban community in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States, located approximately 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Washington, D.C. The area serves as a residential and commercial hub within the Washington metropolitan region. McLean borders the Potomac River to the north and includes portions of the Capital Beltway (I-495) and the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

The community originated in the early 20th century as a stop along the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad. Developer John Roll McLean, publisher of The Washington Post and a prominent landowner, played a key role in its establishment. The area incorporated as the Town of McLean in 1910 but later reverted to an unincorporated status under Fairfax County governance. Post-World War II growth transformed McLean into an affluent suburb, attracting federal employees, diplomats and corporate professionals.

McLean hosts the Central Intelligence Agency’s original headquarters at Langley, completed in 1961. The community also contains the McLean Central Park, the McLean Community Center and the Alden Theatre, a performing arts venue opened in 1975. Notable commercial zones include Tysons Corner, a major edge city that straddles McLean and Vienna, Virginia. The area features high-end retail, corporate offices and luxury residential developments.

Demographically, McLean reflects a diverse, highly educated population with a median household income significantly above national averages. The Fairfax County Public Schools system operates several top-ranked schools in the area, including Langley High School and McLean High School. Cultural institutions such as the Lewinsville Senior Center and the McLean Project for the Arts support local programming in visual and performing arts.

Transportation infrastructure includes the McLean station on Washington Metro’s Silver Line, opened in 2014, and access to Virginia State Route 123 (Dolley Madison Boulevard) and State Route 193 (Georgetown Pike). The community’s proximity to Washington, D.C. and its concentration of government contractors, law firms and technology companies contribute to its economic profile. Historical sites like the Salona estate, built in the 18th century, and the Claude Moore Colonial Farm at Turkey Run provide links to the region’s colonial and agricultural past.
