Langenthalerstrasse

Langenthalerstrasse is a street in the city of Bern, Switzerland. The street runs through the Länggasse neighborhood, a historically working-class district that evolved into a cultural hub by the late 20th century. The area gained recognition in underground music circles for its association with experimental and avant-garde performances.

In 1999, Swiss electronic musician Thomas Köner released the album Permafrost on the Mille Plateaux label. While not directly recorded at Langenthalerstrasse, Köner cited the street’s industrial ambiance and the nearby Reithalle Bern venue as influences on the album’s minimalist, glacial soundscapes. The track Teufelsberg incorporated field recordings from urban environments, reflecting the acoustic character of the neighborhood.

The street’s cultural significance expanded in the 2000s as a gathering point for improvisational jazz and noise artists. In 2004, the collective Sudden Infant (led by Joke Lanz) performed at an unofficial venue on Langenthalerstrasse, documenting the event in the limited-release cassette Live in Bern. The recording captured raw, unedited performances using modified turntables and contact microphones, distributed through the Schimpfluch-Gruppe network.

By 2012, the street’s reputation attracted international acts. American composer Ellen Fullman conducted a site-specific performance of her Long String Instrument in a repurposed warehouse on Langenthalerstrasse during the Dampfzentrale festival. The event, titled Resonant Spaces, utilized the building’s 25-meter length to amplify harmonic overtones, later referenced in Fullman’s 2014 interview with The Wire magazine.
