Indore

Indore is a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It serves as the state’s largest urban center and a commercial hub in west-central India. The city lies on the southern edge of the Malwa Plateau at an elevation of approximately 553 meters above sea level. The Saraswati and Khan rivers traverse the region, with the latter flowing through the city’s core.

Indore’s history traces to the 16th century as a trading post under the Maratha Empire. Raja Rao Nandlal Chaudhary of the Holkar dynasty established it as a planned city in 1715. The Holkar rulers later made Indore their capital in 1733, expanding its infrastructure and cultural influence. The British East India Company gained control in 1818 under the Treaty of Mandsaur, integrating it into the Central India Agency. Post-independence, Indore became part of Madhya Bharat state in 1948 before merging into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

The city hosts a mix of historical and modern architecture. The Rajwada Palace, built by the Holkars in 1749, blends Maratha, Mughal, and French styles and remains a cultural landmark. The Lal Bagh Palace, constructed between 1886 and 1921, exemplifies Indo-European design with Italian marble columns and Belgian stained glass. The Annapurna Temple, dedicated to the goddess of nourishment, attracts pilgrims during the annual Annapurna Jayanti festival. The Chhatris (cenotaphs) of Holkar rulers, erected in the 19th century, stand along the Khan River as funerary monuments.

Indore’s economy centers on trade, textiles, and manufacturing. The city houses the Madhya Pradesh Stock Exchange, established in 1930 as one of India’s oldest regional exchanges. The Pithampur industrial belt, 25 kilometers east, contains automotive and pharmaceutical plants, including operations by multinational corporations. The Indore Junction railway station, inaugurated in 1875, connects the city to major routes via the Western and Central Railway zones. Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, operational since 1948, offers domestic and limited international flights.

Cultural institutions in Indore include the Indore Museum (founded 1929), which displays Paramara-era sculptures and coins, and the Regional Science Centre, established in 1995 under the National Council of Science Museums. The city’s culinary tradition features street food such as poha (flattened rice), sabudana khichdi (sago pilaf), and garadu (fried sweet potato). The annual Indore Utsav, held since 1975, celebrates classical music, dance, and theater with performances by artists like Pandit Jasraj (1988) and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (2001).

Educational institutions include the Indian Institute of Technology Indore (established 2009), the Indian Institute of Management Indore (1996), and Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (1964), a state university with over 300 affiliated colleges. The Press Information Bureau’s Song and Drama Division, headquartered in Indore since 1956, produces government-sponsored cultural programs in regional languages.

As of the 2011 Census of India, Indore’s population exceeded 1.96 million within municipal limits, with an urban agglomeration exceeding 2.17 million. The city consistently ranks among India’s cleanest in the Swachh Survekshan surveys, securing the top position in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The Indore Municipal Corporation, formed in 1956, governs civic administration across 85 wards.
