Hubballi

Hubballi (Kannada: ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿ), formerly known as Hubli, is a city in the northwestern region of the Indian state of Karnataka. It serves as the commercial and administrative center of Dharwad district and forms a twin-city agglomeration with Dharwad, collectively referred to as Hubballi-Dharwad. The city lies on the Deccan Plateau at an elevation of 672 meters (2,205 feet) above sea level and functions as a major railway junction under the South Western Railway zone.

Hubballi emerged as a significant cultural and economic hub in Karnataka during the 19th and 20th centuries. The city hosted the first Akashvani (All India Radio) station in North Karnataka, established in 1936. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and the South Western Railway maintain their divisional headquarters in Hubballi, reinforcing its role in regional transport infrastructure. The city also houses the Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad), founded in 2016, and the Karnatak University, established in Dharwad in 1949.

Hubballi features a blend of architectural styles, including colonial-era buildings and modern infrastructure. The Hubballi Railway Station, constructed in 1910, remains a prominent landmark. The Unkal Lake, developed in the 19th century, serves as a recreational site, while the Nrupatunga Hill offers a panoramic view of the city. Cultural institutions in Hubballi include the Karnataka Sangha, which promotes Kannada literature and performing arts, and the Bharat Scouts and Guides state headquarters. The city hosts annual events such as the Hubballi Utsav, a cultural festival featuring music, dance, and theater performances. The Karnataka State Music and Drama Academy organizes classical music concerts, often held at the Kala Bhavan auditorium.

Notable figures associated with Hubballi include the Hindustani classical vocalist Gangubai Hangal (1913–2009), who belonged to the Kirana gharana and received the Bharat Ratna in 2002. The city also produced the playwright and poet Kuvempu (1904–1994), a Jnanpith Award recipient. Contemporary artists such as the Hubballi-Dharwad Brothers (Hindustani vocal duo) continue the region’s classical music tradition, performing at national festivals like the Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav.

As of the 2011 Census of India, Hubballi recorded a population of 890,000 within its municipal limits, with Kannada as the primary language. The city’s urban expansion led to its inclusion in the Smart Cities Mission in 2016, aiming to improve infrastructure and digital governance.
