Hillsborough Township

Hillsborough Township is a municipality in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. Established on September 12, 1771, the township spans approximately 55 square miles and forms part of the New York metropolitan area. The region features a mix of suburban development, preserved farmland and protected natural areas, including the Sourland Mountain range and portions of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park.

The township’s cultural landscape includes historical sites such as the Van Der Veer House (c. 1770), a Dutch colonial structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Hillsborough Reform Church (1838), a Greek Revival building tied to early 19th-century religious movements. The Duke Farms estate, founded by tobacco industrialist James B. Duke in 1893, occupies 2,740 acres within the township and operates as a public environmental center with gardens, waterfalls and sustainable agriculture programs.

Hillsborough’s economic activity centers on pharmaceutical research, logistics and retail. Major employers include the global headquarters of Johnson & Johnson’s consumer health division and distribution facilities for companies such as Amazon and Walmart. The township hosts an annual Hillsborough Farmers Market (founded 2010) and the Sourland Music Festival (launched 2015), a free outdoor event featuring regional folk, bluegrass and indie artists. Performance venues include the Hillsborough Golf and Country Club, which has hosted charity concerts by artists such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (2018).

Demographically, Hillsborough recorded a population of 42,379 in the 2020 U.S. Census, reflecting a 5.2% increase from 2010. The township operates under a mayor-council government with five elected council members. Public education is managed by the Hillsborough Township Public Schools district, which serves over 7,000 students across nine schools. Notable alumni include Olympic gold medalist Caroline Lind (rowing, 2008 and 2012) and author Junot Díaz, who resided in the township during his adolescence.

Transportation infrastructure includes U.S. Route 206, Interstate 287 and the Somerset Airport, a general aviation facility. NJ Transit provides bus service to Newark and New York City via the 814 and 818 routes. The township’s Hillsborough Branch of the Somerset County Library System (opened 1998) holds over 120,000 volumes and hosts community programs in partnership with local organizations like the Hillsborough Historical Society.

Environmental initiatives in Hillsborough include the Sourland Conservancy (founded 1986), which protects 3,500 acres of forest and wetland habitat, and the township’s Open Space Trust Fund (established 1999), which has preserved over 2,000 acres through land acquisitions. The Hillsborough Greenway, a proposed 5.5-mile multi-use trail, received planning approval in 2021 but remains under development as of 2024.
