Gurugram

Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon) is a city in the northern Indian state of Haryana. It lies approximately 30 kilometers southwest of New Delhi and forms part of the National Capital Region (NCR). The city emerged as a major economic and financial hub in the late 20th century, driven by rapid urbanization and the establishment of multinational corporations, IT firms, and industrial zones. Gurugram serves as a center for commerce, technology, and real estate development in India.

The city’s cultural landscape includes a blend of traditional and contemporary influences. Classical music performances occur in venues such as the Epicentre and Kingdom of Dreams, which host concerts featuring Hindustani and Carnatic traditions. Notable artists who performed in Gurugram include sitarist Pandit Shivkumar Sharma during his 2015 concert at the Siri Fort Auditorium Extension (a venue frequently used for NCR events), and vocalist Kaushiki Chakrabarty, who presented a Dhrupad and Khayal recital in 2019 at The Claridges as part of the Harvas music series. The 2017 Gurugram World Music Festival, organized by the Haryana government, featured fusion collaborations between classical and folk artists, though specific release details for live recordings remain undocumented.

Gurugram’s connection to recorded classical music is limited but includes studio productions by local artists. In 2021, sarod player Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash released Sarod Symphony, a studio album under the Amarrass Records label. The album fused Hindustani raga structures with orchestral arrangements, with notable tracks like Raga Yaman in Symphony and Raga Mishra Pilu. The same year, Gurugram-based nonprofit SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) produced a digital series titled Baithak, featuring live recordings of young classical musicians in intimate settings. The series included performances by sitarist Purbayan Chatterjee and flutist Rakesh Chaurasia, though no commercial release accompanied the online streams.

The city lacks a dedicated classical music archive or major recording studio specializing in the genre. Most classical music activity in Gurugram revolves around live performances, workshops, and corporate-sponsored cultural events. Educational institutions like the Delhi School of Music (with a Gurugram branch) and private gurukuls offer training in Hindustani and Carnatic music, but no significant commercial albums originate exclusively from the city. Historical documentation of Gurugram’s role in classical music remains sparse, with most artistic output tied to its proximity to Delhi’s established music circuits.
