Founded in 1765 as a small agricultural settlement, Gaithersburg incorporated as a town in 1878 and later achieved city status in 1968. The population exceeded 70,000 as of the 2020 U.S. Census, reflecting its growth as a residential and commercial center.

The city hosts the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a federal agency specializing in measurement science and technology standards.
