Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and a center for cultural and artistic activity in the United Kingdom. The city hosts an annual international festival scene that includes performances of Indian classical music, dance, and theater. Venues such as the Usher Hall, Queen’s Hall, and Edinburgh Festival Theatre have featured prominent Indian classical artists over the decades.

In 1986, sitarist Ravi Shankar performed at the Edinburgh International Festival as part of a world tour. The concert showcased his raga-based compositions and featured tabla accompaniment by Alla Rakha. The event marked one of Shankar’s multiple appearances in the city, reinforcing Edinburgh’s role as a destination for global classical traditions. No official live recording from this performance is documented.

The 2005 Edinburgh Mela, an annual multicultural festival, included a performance by vocalist Shubha Mudgal. Mudgal presented a program of khyal and thumri, accompanied by Sudhir Nayak on harmonium and Aneesh Pradhan on tabla. The festival, held at Leith Links, highlighted fusion and traditional forms, though specific track details from Mudgal’s set remain unarchived.

In 2012, the Queen’s Hall hosted a concert by sarod player Amjad Ali Khan as part of the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. Khan performed ragas from the Senia Bangash gharana, with sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash on sarod and Satyajit Talwalkar on tabla. The label Saregama later released a studio album titled Ok Jhumri Talaiyya in 2013, but the live Edinburgh performance exists only in audience recordings.

Edinburgh’s Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) and Summerhall have also presented experimental works blending Indian classical elements with electronic and avant-garde styles. In 2018, composer and veena player N. Rajam collaborated with Scottish harpist Catriona McKay for a cross-cultural improvisation session during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. No commercial release emerged from this event.

The city’s universities, including the University of Edinburgh and Napier University, occasionally host lectures and workshops on Indian classical music. Archives of these events are maintained by institutional libraries, though public access varies. Edinburgh’s connection to Indian classical music remains tied to its festival culture, with intermittent touring performances rather than a permanent resident scene.
