Chicago is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and a notable hub for Indian classical music performances, recordings, and cultural exchange. The city’s South Asian diaspora and academic institutions have fostered collaborations between Indian and Western musicians since the mid-20th century. Venues such as the Old Town School of Folk Music and Symphony Center have hosted performances by artists including Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, and L. Subramaniam. In 1971, Ravi Shankar performed at the Chicago Amphitheatre during his North American tour, accompanied by Alla Rakha on tabla. The Raga to Ricercar project (2012), a collaboration between the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and sitarist Niladri Kumar, premiered at Symphony Center, merging orchestral arrangements with Hindustani improvisation. Local organizations such as Chhandayan Chicago and Sangeet Millennium promote Indian classical music through education and recitals. The Annual Tyagaraja Aradhana festival, held since 2003, celebrates Carnatic music with group renditions of composer Tyagaraja’s kritis. Notable participants have included vocalists Aruna Sairam and T.M. Krishna. The city’s recording studios, including Chicago Recording Company, have produced albums like Sangam (2006, Water Lily Acoustics), where guitarist Fareed Haque and tabla player Kalyan Pathak interpreted ragas in a jazz context.
