Bhavnagar

Bhavnagar is a coastal city in the western Indian state of Gujarat. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Bhavnagar district and lies along the Gulf of Khambhat, approximately 190 kilometers southwest of Ahmedabad. The city was founded in 1723 by Bhavsinhji Gohil of the Gohil Rajput dynasty and developed as a princely state under British colonial rule. Bhavnagar became part of the Indian Union in 1948 following the integration of princely states.

The city features a blend of colonial and traditional Gujarati architecture. Notable landmarks include the Takhteshwar Temple, a hilltop shrine dedicated to Shiva built in 1893, and the Gandhi Smriti, a museum housed in the former Barton Library where Mahatma Gandhi studied. The Nilambag Palace, constructed in 1894 by Maharaja Bhavsinhji II, exemplifies Indo-European architectural fusion and now operates as a heritage hotel. The Bhavnagar University, established in 1978, functions as a major educational institution in the Saurashtra region.

Bhavnagar’s economy historically relied on maritime trade, salt production, and agriculture. The Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard, located 50 kilometers southeast of the city, ranks among the world’s largest shipbreaking facilities. The city also hosts industries in diamond cutting, chemical manufacturing, and engineering. The Gaurishankar Lake and Victoria Park serve as prominent public spaces, while the annual Bhavnagar Utsav celebrates local culture through folk music, dance, and handicrafts.

Transport infrastructure includes the Bhavnagar Airport, which offers domestic flights, and a railway station connecting to major Gujarat cities. The Bhavnagar Port, operational since the 18th century, facilitates cargo and passenger movement. Demographic data from the 2011 Census of India records a population of 593,768 within the municipal corporation limits, with Gujarati as the primary language. The city’s cultural heritage includes contributions to Gujarati literature, theater, and the Gondal Gharana of Indian classical music.
