The Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society (PCMS) is an organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Pandit Chatur Lal, one of the early exponents who brought Indian classical tabla to international audiences. The society focuses on rhythm-based traditions within Indian classical music through concerts, festivals, and educational initiatives.

A key initiative of the society is the Smritiyaan festival, which features performances by established artists and emerging musicians, presenting tabla and broader classical traditions in curated formats. These events are hosted at venues such as Shilpgram (Udaipur) and Bal Gandharva Ranga Mandir (Mumbai).

The society also supports the continuation of this legacy through artists such as Pranshu Chatur Lal, while encouraging engagement with percussion traditions through performances and learning platforms.

History

The Pandit Chatur Lal Memorial Society was established in memory of Pandit Chatur Lal (1926–1965), a tabla artist known for his role in introducing Indian classical rhythm to global audiences during the mid-20th century.

His collaborations with musicians such as Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan contributed to the international recognition of tabla as a concert instrument. The society was formed to commemorate his contributions and to continue the dissemination of tabla traditions.

Over time, PCMS has developed into a platform for festivals, performances, and educational activities, including centenary celebrations marking 100 years of Pandit Chatur Lal’s legacy, sustaining its role in the promotion of Indian classical percussion.
