About SPICMACAY

SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) was founded in 1977 by Dr. Kiran Seth at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The organization began as a voluntary cultural movement aimed at introducing students to India’s classical music, dance, and traditional arts within educational institutions. Over the years, the movement expanded rapidly across universities and schools in India and internationally.

The initiative is rooted in the philosophy of Nishkama Karma, emphasizing selfless service and the sharing of cultural knowledge without expectation of reward. Through the dedication of artists, volunteers, institutions, and supporters, SPIC MACAY has grown into one of the largest cultural outreach organizations promoting Indian heritage among young audiences.

History

SPIC MACAY is a global cultural organization dedicated to promoting Indian classical music, dance, and traditional arts among students and young audiences. The organization aims to enrich formal education by exposing youth to the depth and diversity of India’s cultural heritage through live performances, interactive learning sessions, and cultural immersion programs.

The movement organizes over 5,000 programs annually across schools, universities, and public spaces through more than 800 chapters worldwide. Its activities include classical music and dance concerts, lecture demonstrations, workshops on Hindustani and Carnatic music, classical dance forms such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam, and Odissi, as well as yoga, crafts, and film screenings. Major initiatives include large-scale festivals such as VIRASAT and FEST, international conventions, and outreach programs like Music in the Park.

Operating in more than 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and several European nations, SPIC MACAY works through a collaborative network of artists, volunteers, educational institutions, and cultural supporters. By creating opportunities for direct interaction between artists and students, the organization continues to play a significant role in preserving and transmitting the traditions of Indian performing arts to new generations.
