About Nisarga Art Hub

Nisarga Art Hub is a community-driven cultural space in Angamaly, Kerala, created as a residency and gathering platform for music, arts, and collaborative exchange. Conceived by a family of musicians, the hub brings together performance, learning, and living within a shared environment.

The space is designed by Wallmakers, an architecture practice focused on sustainable and site-responsive construction. The design integrates traditional Kerala roofing concepts with contemporary adaptations, including skylights that allow natural light and also function as amphitheater-style seating. A unique feature of the space is its convertible performance area, where a swimming pool can be transformed into a stage using wooden planks, accommodating intimate concerts.

Nisarga Art Hub regularly hosts music workshops, open jam sessions, community concerts, and experimental formats that encourage interaction between artists and audiences. The space emphasizes sustainability, creativity, and a close-knit cultural experience rooted in both tradition and innovation.

History

Nisarga Art Hub was developed as an initiative by musicians seeking to create a dedicated environment for artistic interaction and cultural exchange. Located near a paddy field in Kerala, the project was shaped by the surrounding landscape and traditional architectural elements.

The design evolved from the idea of reinterpreting Kerala’s sloping roofs by introducing skylights to address modern requirements for light and openness. This led to the creation of a hybrid structure combining performance space and architecture, including the integration of amphitheater seating within the roof design.

Designed by Wallmakers, founded by architect Vinu Daniel in 2007, the project reflects a broader philosophy of sustainable architecture. The use of techniques such as the Shuttered Debris Wall and recycled materials aligns with the firm’s approach to environmentally responsive design.

Over time, Nisarga Art Hub has grown into a space for intimate performances, workshops, and artistic residencies, contributing to alternative cultural practices and community-based art experiences in Kerala.
