About Ministry of Culture
The Ministry of Culture functions as the central authority for safeguarding and promoting India’s cultural legacy. Its primary mandate is the preservation and conservation of ancient heritage, along with the development and promotion of India’s diverse art forms and knowledge traditions.
The Ministry oversees a wide institutional framework comprising two attached offices, seven subordinate offices, and thirty-four autonomous organisations, all funded by the Government of India. These bodies collectively manage museums, archives, archaeological sites, libraries, cultural academies, and research institutions that document and transmit India’s cultural memory.
Broadly, the Ministry’s work covers three key areas: tangible heritage (monuments, museums, manuscripts, and archives), intangible heritage (music, dance, theatre, oral traditions, and folk practices), and knowledge heritage. In addition, it carries responsibility for nurturing Gandhian heritage and for organising national commemorations connected with major historical events and personalities.
As of the current term, the Ministry is headed by Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat as Hon’ble Minister of Culture, with Rao Inderjit Singh serving as Hon’ble Minister of State for Culture.
