Classical unBOUND

Classical Unbound was created with the idea that “classical” music does not need to remain confined to formal spaces or fixed traditions. The festival focuses on rethinking how music is presented, pairing older works with contemporary compositions and crossing stylistic boundaries to encourage new ways of listening.

Its collaboration with the Ironwood String Quartet developed naturally, as both were founded around the same time with similar artistic intentions. With Jessica Linnebach as co-founder of both, their connection became clear during Ironwood’s appearances at the festival in 2017. This partnership has since evolved, with the quartet now serving as co-artistic directors.

Programming at Classical Unbound is built around musical pairing—placing works from different periods and styles in dialogue. Early chamber music may appear alongside new compositions, allowing each to change how the other is heard. The aim is to introduce older music to new audiences and contemporary music to traditional listeners.

The festival treats concerts as shared, immersive experiences. Music unfolds in real time, and audiences experience it together. Classical Unbound designs its programs to encourage attentive listening, reflection, and emotional connection across time and style.
