The Baithak Project

Baithak is an arts and education initiative focused on building equitable access to music within India’s public school system. Formally launched in 2016, its roots lie in a small weekend program started in 2015, which demonstrated how regular exposure to music could transform classroom environments and enhance student engagement.

The core objective of Baithak is to ensure that children from economically and socially marginalized backgrounds have the same opportunities to experience and learn music as those in private or well-resourced schools. By embedding structured music programs within public schools and community centers, Baithak creates a consistent and inclusive learning environment rather than treating music as an occasional activity.

Today, the initiative directly reaches more than 8,000 children across 137 public schools and community spaces. Students are introduced to different musical forms through regular sessions that emphasize participation, listening, rhythm, and creative expression. These programs are designed to be part of the school routine, making music a normal and valued aspect of education.

An important dimension of Baithak’s model is its support for young artists. Over 200 musicians and educators are engaged through the program, enabling them to earn sustainable livelihoods while working as teachers and facilitators. This creates a cycle where artistic practice, education, and community development reinforce each other.

By linking classrooms with practicing artists, Baithak functions as both an educational framework and a cultural network. It positions music not only as an art form but as a tool for confidence-building, social connection, and long-term opportunity within public education.
