Teen Tala

Teen Tala is a tabla composition recorded by Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakhwa and Ustad Amir Hussain Khan. The track appears as side B1 on the 1969 album Rhythms Of India (Tabla Recital). Odeon released the recording on a 12\" vinyl format.

The album showcases a traditional North Indian classical percussion recital. Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakhwa and Ustad Amir Hussain Khan perform the composition in the teen tala rhythmic cycle, a 16-beat structure fundamental to Hindustani music. The recording captures the artists’ interplay through intricate bol patterns, layakari (tempo variations), and improvisational techniques characteristic of the Farrukhabad gharana, to which both musicians belonged.

Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakhwa (1892–1976) served as a leading exponent of the Farrukhabad style, known for his refined tone and command over complex rhythmic phrases. Ustad Amir Hussain Khan (1915–1979), his disciple and frequent collaborator, contributed to the gharana’s legacy through performances and pedagogical work. Their partnership on this track exemplifies the guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) tradition in Indian classical music.

Rhythms Of India (Tabla Recital) remains a documented example of mid-20th-century tabla performance, preserving the artistry of two central figures in the genre.
