Reel Three (Madhya Laya)

Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakhwa released Thirakwa in 1999 under the Simla House label. The album appeared on CD and showcased Thirakhwa’s mastery of the tabla, a North Indian classical percussion instrument. The recording captured his improvisational skill and command of rhythmic cycles central to Hindustani music.

The third track, Reel Three (Madhya Laya), spans seven minutes. Thirakhwa structured the composition in madhya laya, a medium tempo that balances intricacy and clarity. The piece demonstrates his use of traditional kaida, rela, and tihai patterns, interspersed with spontaneous variations. The track highlights the dynamic interplay between the dayan (right drum) and bayan (left drum), a hallmark of his style.

The album title Thirakwa references the artist’s stage name, derived from his ancestral village in present-day Uzbekistan. Thirakhwa’s performances on this release aligned with his broader influence on 20th-century tabla repertoire, particularly his development of the Ajrada gharana techniques. The 1999 CD compilation included studio recordings, though specific session dates and accompanying artists remain undocumented in available sources.

Simla House, a label specializing in Indian classical music, produced the album with an emphasis on acoustic fidelity. The release contributed to the preservation of Thirakhwa’s legacy, as he passed away in 1976. Later reissues and digital distributions extended the album’s accessibility, though the original 1999 edition remained the primary commercial version.
